Basic Concept #63: Of Course There’s an “I” in Team

The Art of Strategic Visibility

You’ve heard the phrase: “There’s no ‘I’ in team.” It’s corporate gospel. Meant to keep you humble, selfless, focused on the collective good. Don’t make it about yourself. Blend in. Serve the whole.

And yes, there’s truth in that. But let’s not be naive about what else is happening.

I’ve watched brilliant people follow this advice religiously. They sublimate their individual strengths for the sake of harmony, deflecting credit, downplay their contributions, and make sure everyone else looks good. They become the perfect team player.

Then promotion season comes, and they wonder why less collaborative but more visible colleagues get the opportunities.

Here’s what nobody wants to say out loud: Teams aren’t just collaborative units. They’re talent evaluation systems. Every meeting is an audition, every project is a performance review. And every crisis reveals who can handle pressure and who steps up when things matter.

While you’re ensuring everyone gets credit, others are ensuring they get noticed. While you’re focused on team harmony, others are building their reputation for individual competence.

Organizations don’t promote teams. They promote individuals who’ve proven they can excel both independently and collaboratively.

The strongest individuals do stand out. Not by sabotaging others, but by consistently demonstrating competence, clarity, and impact while contributing to team success. Over time, that shapes perception. And perception shapes opportunity.

So, the reality is: You can be collaborative and generous. But if you’re invisible, you’re limiting your career potential. The goal isn’t choosing between team service and individual advancement. It’s mastering both.
